IL Monastero is a recently restored apartment located in the 900-year-old Camaldolese monastery of San Bartolomeo, one of the oldest existing buildings in the original ancient center of Anghiari. Local historians and self-proclaimed "experts" argue whether this is the 1st or 2nd oldest building (dating to 1105) still extant—but either way, you can be comfortable that you are staying in a noble and historic ancient building, where monks practiced their daily duties and medieval ablutions centuries ago.

This apartment provides comfortable and centrally-located lodging for a couple or party of four adults, and is fitted with all of the desirable modern amenities while showcasing the character and original features it was born with 900 years ago. The remodel opened the original hand-hewn stone walls to view, and retained the chestnut ceiling beams and terra cotto tiles. At Il Monastero, you are minutes away from the shopping centre of the village, with its weekly (Wednesday morning) produce, meat and clothing market and excellent shops and restaurants available throughout the year.



Renting Il Monastero is particularly appropriate for one or two couples, families with older children, honeymooners, artists, writers, researchers, those on sabbatical from teaching or work, or anyone searching for a comfortable home base in an unspoiled (and nearly undiscovered) Tuscan village.

Italian culinary classes and one-time in-home meals can be arranged in advance with your host, a former California wine-country restaurateur, or with one of our tradition-based Tuscan housewives (casalinga, the real thing!). Shopping at our local vendors for wine, cheeses, and olive oil can also be booked directly with the artisans. A book with events, (highly-biased) suggestions, guest comments/recommendations, and local information is maintained in the house for your use.



Il Monastero has undergone an extensive three-year remodel in keeping with the original structure and Tuscan character, and consists of an entryway, full kitchen, 2 bedrooms (European single beds), large bathroom and hallway. It is furnished with Italian antiques or artisan-made furniture, and decorated with works by local artists and photographers. It sleeps 4 adults, and rents for €700 per week (Saturday-Saturday) during season, plus a refundable security deposit of €100. This apartment is not suitable for toddlers or young children. It is a non-smoking apartment, and pets are not accepted.
