Driving to Anghiari from your airport: Roma, Firenze or Milano
From Roma (Rome): Fiumicino/Da Vinci Airport
The trip should take 2 ½ - 3 hours, depending on traffic and the ever-ongoing road construction. Some portions of the drive will require tolls, so have some change or a credit card available.
- From the airport exit, follow the overhead signs for highway A1, direction Firenze. Take Exit 10 from the Roma ring road, and continue to choose lanes for A1/Firenze/E45 from the directional signs above.
- After 30-40 kilometers on the A1, take the right exit for E45, marked ORTE/TERNI/PERUGIA/VITERBO. Stay to the right and follow the signs for highway E45, direction PERUGIA – CESENA.
- About 70 kilometers after Orte, the road will fork: take the left fork, direction CESENA. Do not take the direction PERUGIA, which is on the right--this will take you into the center of Perugia, and away from the highway.
- Remain on the E45. After about 60 kilometers, take the exit SANSEPOLCRO. The exit ramp will place you on a roundabout; drive counterclockwise and follow the direction AREZZO. Pass a large service station on your right, cross a bridge (Tevere), and turn right at the intersection immediately after the business GiorniAldo, following the blue sign for ANGHIARI.
- Remain on this direct road through the first curve, three intersections and a roundabout, and after a few minutes, you will have a great view of Anghiari ahead of you on the hill. As you enter the lower section of town, you will pass through a 4-way stoplight, after which the road will split; take the curve to the right and begin climbing. At the next fork, you will take a sharp left (180 degree—towards centro) and continue to climb. Pay attention to your driving, but you will see some wonderful views of medieval Anghiari and its fortress walls to your left as you drive to the top.
- At the top of this section of road, you will come to your first 4-way intersection (no stop sign). Turn to your left, then take another quick left in front of the church on your right (Della Croce, only a few meters), which will place you on Corso Matteotti, going one-way back down the hill.
- Continue down Matteotti, watching for Piazza Baldaccio with its statue of Garibaldi pointing towards Rome about halfway down on your right. You can park on the right hand side of C. Matteotti, or in the piazza if space is available. If you park in the piazza, there is a machine for parking tickets on the low wall behind Garibaldi (1 Euro for 2 hours). There is a phone booth at the far end of the piazza.
- If you miss the entrance to the piazza, there is another large free parking area on your left below the main part of town. An elevator from there will take you back up into the center.
From Firenze (Florence): Peretola/Amerigo Vespucci Airport
This drive will take 1 1/2-2 hours, depending on traffic and highway construction. The A1 is a toll highway, so have some coins or a credit card available.
- Take highway A1 direction ROME (At the airport exit and within the city you will see green signs pointing you to AUTOSTRADA/A1). Follow these until you enter the A1 through a toll lane, stopping to pick up a ticket.
- After about 60 km, take exit AREZZO. If paying in cash, take one of the lanes with a sign above it showing a hand and coins—this will give you an attendant in the booth. Pay your toll and turn left following the sign towards AREZZO
- After about 10 kilometers you will come to a major 4-way intersection with traffic light: follow the sign SANSEPOLCRO - ANGHIARI to the left.
- You will circle the outer part of the city of Arezzo. After several stop lights you will come to a stop sign: turn left, always following the direction towards SANSEPOLCRO. Depending on local construction (going on for the last 22 years), you will now be on what is mostly a 4-lane road.
- Stay on this road (S73) for about 25 kilometers, passing near a number of small towns and working girls (non-Italian, as the locals will quickly point out), plying their buisness from campers and station wagons. Wait—I am getting diverted. You will pass several small villages, including Palazzo d'Pero, Molino Nuovo, and LE VILLE. A few kilometers after Le Ville, you will pass through a roundabout; watch for a small blue sign to the left marked ANGHIARI. Turn left into this road and continue into the upper section of Anghiari.
- As you reach the main part of Anghiari, you will pass through an area of new housing, a small selection of businesses (Bar Cocomero, Eurospar) and a park (Campo dei Fiera) on your right. There is free public parking behind the Propositura church (turn right into the street at the end of Campo dei Fiera and watch for blue signs with symbol “P” on your right), or another lot on your left just after the park.
- To proceed to Piazza Baldaccio instead, continue past the park to the T-intersection directly in front of the church (Della Croce); turn right onto Corso Matteotti, going one-way down the hill towards Sansepolcro.
- Continue down Matteotti, watching for Piazza Baldaccio with its statue of Garibaldi pointing towards Rome about halfway down on your right. You can park on the right hand side of C. Matteotti, or in the piazza if space is available. If you park in the piazza, there is a machine for parking tickets on the low stone wall behind Garibaldi (1 Euro for 2 hours). There is a phone booth at the far end of the piazza from where you entered. If you miss the entrance to the piazza, there is another large free parking area on your left below the main part of town. An elevator from there will take you back up into the center.
- If you park on the street, set your clock/disco (probably on your windshield) to your hour of arrival. Matteotti is a one-hour parking zone, though not heavily enforced.
From Milano (Milan): Malpensa Airport
The trip should take 4-5 hours, depending on traffic and the ever-ongoing road construction. Some portions of the drive will require tolls, so have some change or a credit card available.
- Take highway A1 direction Bologna-Firenze. (At the airport exit and within the city you will see green signs pointing you to AUTOSTRADA/A1). Just before arriving at Bologna (190 kilometers from Milan), look for highway A14 direction ANCONA
- Take exit CESENA NORD (100 kilometers after Bologna). After you pay the toll and you are off the exit ramp, follow the signs for highway E45 PERUGIA – ROMA.
- Stay on highway E45 for approximately 70 kilometers until the exit for SANSEPOLCRO. The exit ramp will place you on a roundabout; drive counterclockwise and follow the direction AREZZO. Pass a large service station on your right, cross a bridge (Tevere), and turn right at the intersection after the business GiorniAldo, following the blue sign for ANGHIARI.
